20+ Best YA Fantasy Novels

I feel like I'm in the minority when I say that fantasy is not usually my thing. I'm much more of a contemporary/crime/thriller reader. But I do enjoy a good YA fantasy when they are done right, with a good romance, complex characters and well-rounded world building. Here are 20+ of the best YA Fantasies: 

1. Shadow and Bone - Leigh Bardugo 

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

My thoughts: I binged this trilogy back in April and absolutely loved it. Admittedly, I do think the series goes downhill from the first book, and the romance/love-triangle isn't the best, but these books are a must-read for introducing you to the Grishaverse. I am so. hyped. for the Netflix adaptation coming soon!

My thoughts: I think this one is hard to get into it, but it's definitely worth it after the first 50 pages or so. Bardugo's progression as a writer and storyteller is clear from how much better this duology is than her first trilogy, which I think is amazing to see! These books really are Oceans 11 set in a fantasy world so if that sounds up your street I would definitely read them. 

3. City of Bones - Cassandra Clare 

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

My thoughts: I read this years ago when I actually was a teen reader, and really enjoyed it. I can't remember too much, and I'm definitely due a proper reread, but I know that the Shadowhunter world was like nothing I've read before. 

4. Clockwork Angel - Cassandra Clare 

The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them...

My thoughts: I read The Infernal Devices trilogy back-to-back for the first time in September and absolutely loved it. I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I ever would, and definitely thought it was an improvement on The Mortal Instruments. You can read my full review of the trilogy here. 

5. Four Dead Queens - Astrid Scholte 

Seventeen-year-old Keralie Corrington may seem harmless, but in fact, she's one of Quadara's most skilled thieves and a liar. My thoughts: I loved this one - you can't really go wrong with a fantasy set in 1920s America, can you? I love Libba Bray in general, but it's been years since I read The Diviners - I must give it a reread so I can continue with the rest of the books in the series. 

10. An Ember in the Ashes - Sabaa Tahir

My thoughts: I read this series years ago and absolutely loved it. It's got that perfect boarding school magic vibe, and Rachel Hawkins' writing is also absolutely hilarious. The whole trilogy is very light-hearted, so is a perfect choice if you're not feeling the heaviness of an epic fantasy. 

19. Anna Dressed in Blood - Kendare Blake 

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

Yet she spares Cas's life. 

My thoughts: It's very rare that I read a book all in one sitting, but this was one of them! It's highly unusual and extremely captivating and I really, really enjoyed it. 

20. Rebel Belle - Rachel Hawkins 

Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper's destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.

Just when life can't get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she's charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper's least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him—and discovers that David's own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y'all beg for more.

My thoughts: This is another atypical fantasy from Rachel Hawkins, with an even bigger element of humour than Hex Hall, but I really loved it. It feels like a teen drama with fantasy elements added on in a way which is highly believable, 

21. Red Queen - Victoria Aveyard 

This is a world divided by blood - red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.
