10 Most Anticipated Books of 2020

We're right at the start of 2020, which means one thing for book lovers everywhere - time to get excited for the new books the year ahead holds! Here is a list of the top 10 most anticipated books due to be released this year, according to Goodreads.

American Dirt - Jeanine Cummins

My thoughts: I've seen this book called the Where the Crawdads Sing of 2020, which, if true, means it'll be gathering a lot of fans. It sounds very intriguing so I'm interested in picking it up myself!

My Dark Vanessa - Kate Elizabeth Russell

My thoughts: I'm so glad I decided to write this blog post, because now this book is on my radar, I cannot wait to pick it up. I absolutely love psychological books - I think they're so skilful when done well - so this one sounds right up my street.

The Night Watchman - Louise Erdrich

From Goodreads: "Thomas Wazhashk is the night watchman at the jewel bearing plant, the first factory located near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota. He is also a Chippewa Council member who is trying to understand the consequences of a new “emancipation” bill on its way to the floor of the United States Congress. It is 1953 and he and the other council members know the bill isn’t about freedom; Congress is fed up with Indians. The bill is a “termination” that threatens the rights of Native Americans to their land and their very identity. How can the government abandon treaties made in good faith with Native Americans “for as long as the grasses shall grow, and the rivers run”?

My thoughts: This sounds like one of those novels which is a true example of craft - the story sounds intricate and complex and I can't wait to dive right in.

The Glass Hotel - Emily St. John Mandel

From Goodreads: "Vincent is a bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star hotel on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. On the night she meets Jonathan Alkaitis, a hooded figure scrawls a message on the lobby's glass wall: "Why don't you swallow broken glass." Leon Prevant, a shipping executive for Neptune-Avradimis, reads the words and orders a drink to calm down. Alkaitis, the owner of the hotel and a wealthy investment manager, arrives too late to read the threat, never knowing it was intended for him. My thoughts: This one sounds rather eclectic, but sometimes those make for the best reads. I imagine it won't be an easy read, but one that really makes you think.  

A Good Neighbour - Therese Anne Fowler

My thoughts: Again, this is a read that sounds like a rather deep social commentary, but I do think these can make for some of the most profound and thought-provoking reads. 

All Adults Here - Emma Straub

My thoughts: I love books centred around the complexities of family dynamics so this is one I'll definitely be adding to my list.

Transcendent Kingdom - Yaa Gyasi

My thoughts: If I'm being honest, I have not read Gyasi's first book, Homecoming, but the description of this new book is making me want to pick it up instantly.

Long Bright River - Liz Moore

My thoughts: I absolutely love thrillers, and this one sounds completely gripping as well as having deeper social commentary running throughout.

The City We Became - N.K. Jemisin

From Goodreads: "Every city has a soul. Some are as ancient as myths, and others are as new and destructive as children. New York City? She's got five.

But every city also has a dark side. A roiling, ancient evil stirs beneath the earth, threatening to destroy the city and her five protectors unless they can come together and stop it once and for all."

My thoughts: I've heard so many good things about N.K. Jemisin over the years, and this new book sounds amazing.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - Suzanne Collins

From Goodreads: "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will revisit the world of Panem sixty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Tenth Hunger Games."


My thoughts: I loved The Hunger Games so much when I was younger but was completely let down with the ending of the trilogy. Maybe this new release can help fill the hole Mockingjay left in my heart?
