10 most romantic books to read this Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is just around the corner, so it's time to roll out 10 perfect romance books to get you in the mood. Whether you like your romances light and fluffy, or dark and complex, there's a book for you on this list below.
To All the Boys I've Loved Before - Jenny Han
"To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the story of Lara
Jean, who has never openly admitted her crushes, but instead wrote each boy a
letter about how she felt, sealed it, and hid it in a box under her bed.
But one day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box
of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront
her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her
sister's ex-boyfriend, Josh.
As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara
Jean discovers that something good may come out of these letters after
all."
I am actually not a big fan of light and fluffy romances -
they just don't keep my attention, so it's very rare that I'll actually enjoy
one enough to finish it. However, no matter how popular To All the Boys is, and
no matter how many of you have already read it - I simply have to include it on
this list because it is one of those very rare books for me. I absolutely loved
this trilogy when I first read it two years ago, and it's got the perfect
balance of feeling like a light romance whilst having enough character depth
and complexity to keep it engaging.
The Duke and I - Julia Quinn
"In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London,
rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to
address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are
unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and
aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable… but not too amiable.
Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The
fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships
with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her
kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest
for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.
Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset,
Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun
both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout
his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers
another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas
who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her
prospects and her reputation soar.
The plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the
glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one
certainty: love ignores every rule..."
If you were one of the many fans of the Bridgerton series on
Netflix, make sure you check out the book which inspired it! Along with the
seven books which follow, The Duke and I is a steamy romance set in Regency-era England - so if you like your
historical settings, this is one for your list.
Bridget Jones's Diary - Helen Fielding
"Meet Bridget Jones—a 30-something Singleton who is
certain she would have all the answers if she could:
a. lose 7 pounds
b. stop smoking
c. develop Inner Poise
"123 lbs. (how is it possible to put on 4 pounds in the
middle of the night? Could flesh have somehow solidified becoming denser and
heavier? Repulsive, horrifying notion), alcohol units 4 (excellent), cigarettes
21 (poor but will give up totally tomorrow), number of correct lottery numbers
2 (better, but nevertheless useless)..."
Bridget Jones' Diary is the devastatingly self-aware,
laugh-out-loud daily chronicle of Bridget's permanent, doomed quest for
self-improvement — a year in which she resolves to: reduce the circumference of
each thigh by 1.5 inches, visit the gym three times a week not just to buy a
sandwich, form a functional relationship with a responsible adult, and learn to
program the VCR.
Over the course of the year, Bridget loses a total of 72
pounds but gains a total of 74. She remains, however, optimistic. Through it
all, Bridget will have you helpless with laughter, and — like millions of
readers the world round — you'll find yourself shouting, "Bridget Jones is
me!""
This novel-in-diary-format book has got to be the romcom of
all romcoms - if you want a book to fly through this Valentine's, make sure you
pick this one up.
The Notebook - Nicholas Sparks
"Set amid the austere beauty of the North Carolina
coast begins the story of Noah Calhoun, a rural Southerner recently returned
from the Second World War. Noah is restoring a plantation home to its former
glory, and he is haunted by images of the beautiful girl he met fourteen years
earlier, a girl he loved like no other. Unable to find her, yet unwilling to
forget the summer they spent together, Noah is content to live with only
memories...until she unexpectedly returns to his town to see him once again.
Like a puzzle within a puzzle, the story of Noah and Allie
is just the beginning. As it unfolds, their tale miraculously becomes something
different, with much higher stakes. The result is a deeply moving portrait of
love itself, the tender moments and the fundamental changes that affect us all.
It is a story of miracles and emotions that will stay with you forever."
I absolutely love this story - the relationship between Noah
and Allie is so addictive. The hugely famous film is also a great adaptation to
watch this Valentine's Day!
The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
"Jay Gatsby is the man who has everything. But one
thing will always be out of his reach. Everybody who is anybody is seen at his
glittering parties. Day and night his Long Island mansion buzzes with bright
young things drinking, dancing, and debating his mysterious character. For
Gatsby---young, handsome, and fabulously rich---always seems alone in the
crowd, watching and waiting, though no one knows what for. Beneath the
shimmering surface of his life he is hiding a secret: a silent longing that can
never be fulfilled. And soon this destructive obsession will force his world to
unravel."
One of my all time favourite books, The Great Gatsby is
based around the repercussions of a tragic and complex love story - so if you
prefer a darker romance and you haven't yet read this one, I would definitely
recommend.
Paris: A Love Story - Kati Marton
"In this remarkably honest and candid memoir,
award-winning journalist and distinguished author Kati Marton narrates an
impassioned and romantic story of love, loss, and life after loss. Paris is at
the heart of this deeply moving account. At every stage of her life, Paris
offers Marton beauty and excitement, and now, after the sudden death of her
husband Richard Holbrooke, it offers a chance for a fresh beginning. With
intimate and nuanced portraits of Peter Jennings, the man to whom she was
married for fifteen years and with whom she had two children, and Richard, with
whom she found enduring love, Marton paints a vivid account of an adventuresome
life in the stream of history. Inspirational and deeply human, Paris: A Love
Story will touch every generation."
This book is about finding love, but also losing it - it's a
read that really pulls on your heart strings. If you're a fan of some tragedy,
add this to your list.
The Marriage Plot - Jeffrey Eugenides
"It's the early 1980s - the country is in a deep
recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafés on College
Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling Derrida and listening to the Talking
Heads. But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis
on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at
the heart of the greatest English novels.
As Madeleine tries to understand why "it became
laughable to read writers like Cheever and Updike, who wrote about the suburbia
Madeleine and most of her friends had grown up in, in favor of reading the
Marquis de Sade, who wrote about deflowering virgins in eighteenth century
France," real life, in the form of two very different guys, intervenes.
Leonard Bankhead - charismatic loner, college Darwinist, and lost Portland boy
- suddenly turns up in a semiotics seminar, and soon Madeleine finds herself in
a highly charged erotic and intellectual relationship with him. At the same
time, her old "friend" Mitchell Grammaticus - who's been reading
Christian mysticism and generally acting strange - resurfaces, obsessed with
the idea that Madeleine is destined to be his mate.
Over the next year, as the members of the triangle in this
amazing, spellbinding novel graduate from college and enter the real world,
events force them to reevaluate everything they learned in school. Leonard and
Madeleine move to a biology laboratory on Cape Cod, but can't escape the secret
responsible for Leonard's seemingly inexhaustible energy and plunging moods.
And Mitchell, traveling around the world to get Madeleine out of his mind,
finds himself face-to-face with ultimate questions about the meaning of life,
the existence of God, and the true nature of love."
If you're looking for a messy romance which tells the story
of the powerful, obsessive kind of love which constantly draws people back to
each other, this book has got you covered.
The Time Traveller's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
"A funny, often poignant tale of boy meets girl with a
twist: what if one of them couldn't stop slipping in and out of time? Highly
original and imaginative, this debut novel raises questions about life, love,
and the effects of time on relationships.
Audrey Niffenegger’s innovative debut, The Time Traveler’s
Wife, is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, an
adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and
Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry
thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people
diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock
resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional
gravity in his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his
experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.
The Time Traveler’s Wife depicts the effects of time travel
on Henry and Clare’s marriage and their passionate love for each other as the
story unfolds from both points of view. Clare and Henry attempt to live normal
lives, pursuing familiar goals—steady jobs, good friends, children of their
own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor
control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable."
If you're looking for a romance with an unconventional
twist, this is absolutely one for your list.
Daisy Jones and the Six - Taylor Jenkins Reid
"A gripping novel about the whirlwind rise of an iconic
1970s rock group and their beautiful lead singer, revealing the mystery behind
their infamous break up.
Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows
the real reason why they split at the absolute height of their popularity…until
now.
Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties,
sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming
of singing at the Whisky a Go-Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the
rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting
noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy
things.
Another band getting noticed is The Six, led by the brooding
Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out
she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy
goes a little wild on the road.
Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes the key
to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will
become the stuff of legend."
This book is not explicitly a romance book - i.e. it's not
marketed as within the romance genre. However, the central thrust of the story
focuses on a a powerful undeniable love between the two lead singers of the
band, Daisy Jones and the Six, and the will-they won't-they throughout is one
of the best I've ever read. I love this book because the way it portrays
romance is so realistic, with passionate, obsessive love effectively contrasted
to a quiet, steady kind of love.
When Katie Met Cassidy - Camille Perri
"Katie Daniels is a perfection-seeking 28-year-old
lawyer living the New York dream. She’s engaged to charming art curator Paul
Michael, has successfully made her way up the ladder at a multinational law
firm and has a hold on apartments in Soho and the West Village. Suffice it to
say, she has come a long way from her Kentucky upbringing.
But the rug is swept from under Katie when she is suddenly
dumped by her fiance, Paul Michael, leaving her devastated and completely lost.
On a whim, she agrees to have a drink with Cassidy Price-a self-assured,
sexually promiscuous woman she meets at work. The two form a newfound
friendship, which soon brings into question everything Katie thought she knew
about sex—and love."
This is a book which at once explores the themes of gender
equality and female sexuality whilst also being a highly entertaining, easy to
read romcom.
